Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counselling

Cambridgeshire, UK
Hi, I'm Lois! I am a child and adolescent psychotherapeutic counsellor, fully accredited and clinically registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). I specialise in working with young people aged 4 to 19, using an integrative art-based approach that invites clients to explore their thoughts and feelings using art, play, and sand tray work, alongside traditional talking therapy.
Using an integrative approach allows me to draw upon a variety of theory in my practice, to provide personalised therapy sessions tailored to each client’s needs. The art-based tools I intertwine to work at greater depth are always optional; some clients find them helpful in expressing their feelings, while others prefer talking therapy alone.
I have extensive experience supporting children and their families through gaining a Postgraduate Diploma in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapeutic Counselling at the University of Cambridge, my previous role as a primary school teacher, and ongoing work as a therapist.
I understand that starting therapy can feel overwhelming, so I focus on building a trusting, supportive relationship with each client. Research shows that a strong, safe therapeutic connection is essential for positive change. Therefore, my goal is to create a warm, judgement-free environment where clients feel comfortable exploring their thoughts and emotions.
Our first session is an opportunity to get to know each other, discuss what has brought the client to therapy, and consider whether we would like to work together. I will also explain the confidentiality agreement and answer any questions the client may have. From there, we collaborate to identify goals and manage expectations as we move forward in weekly sessions.
I use a therapy room in the heart of Cambridge for my private practice and I currently have availability on Monday afternoons.
After a short conversation on the phone, I arrange to meet with parents face to face for an initial assessment. After the initial assessment, I engage in weekly sessions with the client. Review sessions, to which both the client and their parent(s) are invited, usually take place termly.
An initial assessment with parent(s) is £80.
Weekly therapy sessions with a child/young person are £65.
Please contact Lois@therapywithlois.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.
A therapist and client work together to build a trusting, confidential relationship, which is often a uniquely beneficial experience for clients. Additionally, I have experience in working with a wide range of issues affecting children and young people, including anxiety, depression, emotional dysregulation, family difficulties, grief and loss, gender and sexuality concerns, trauma, and more.
Counselling sessions are 50 minutes long. The initial assessment with parent(s) is typically longer, lasting 60–90 minutes. Review sessions, which usually take place termly, are also 50 minutes. Both the client and their parent(s) are invited to participate in the reviews.
One of the benefits of private therapy is its open-ended nature, allowing clients to engage without a fixed end date. However, endings in therapy are an important part of the process and should be approached thoughtfully. I collaborate with both the client and their parents to determine the right time to conclude sessions. While some clients attend therapy for a few months, others may continue for several years.
Forty-eight hours notice is required to cancel a session (at no cost); otherwise the session is charged at the full rate.
